pacific northwest trail thru-hike
My first thru-hike of a National Scenic Trail was a truly rugged adventure. The Pacific Northwest Trail was much more difficult than I expected. I ran into just 7 thru-hikers that year, and the first two blazes marking the trail were separated by a distance of nearly 100 miles. Because of its east-to-west orientation, each and every mountain range from the Continental Divide to the Pacific Ocean is crossed, making 10,000 ft of elevation gain/loss each day normalcy. Rugged, and absolutely beautiful.
